RDA & LRM (online)

4 x 3 hour online course on the significance of RDA and LRM in the daily workflow of cataloguing and for searching in catalogues.

RDA (Resource Description and Access) is a meta data standard for cataloguing of materials in the world of libraries and cultutal heritage.RDA consists of a collection of data-elements with related guidelines and instructions. This standard is compliant with international models for Linked Data applications like for example LRM (Library Reference Model).

Target audience

This course is aimed at experienced cataloguers who on a daily basis deal with creating records and assigning search entries in catalogues.

Structure

During this 4 x 3 hour workshop our lecturer will guide you through the course material in an interactive and practical way to ensure that you not only get the needed knowledge and insight but develop your skills as well.

Result

After completing the course you will

  • know why RDA is important and how it compares to other much uses standards in the world of libraries
  • understand how RDA changes cataloguing and the use of bibliographic records
  • be aware of the consequences for your daily work.

The RDA & LRM course covers the following topics:

    • relationship between RDA and LRM with existing international cataloging standards ISBD, MARC21 and IFLA’s Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP)
  • LRM
    • user demands amd requierements of a modern catalogue
    • the entity-relations model
    • the entities in LRM
    • relationships and attributes in LRM
  • RDA
    • organisation, structure, key concepts, terminology and principles
    • RDA Registry and the RDA Toolkit (content and features)
    • advantages and disadvantages
    • RDA in an international context; management and global development of RDA 
    • consequences of RDA for the daily workflow of cataloguers
  • RDA Toolkit
    • practical use
